SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite and that name tells you a lot about what makes it different. SPC flooring is an engineered rigid core product made primarily from limestone powder,polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and stabilising agentsThese materials are fused under heat and pressure into a dense, dimensionally stable core that gives SPC its defining characteristic: it does not expand, contract, or warp regardless of changes in temperature or humidity.
A standard SPC plank has four distinct layers.At the base is a pre-attached underlayer for sound absorption and comfort underfoot.Above that sits the rigid SPC core the structural heart of the product. A high-resolution printed film layer sits on top of the core, delivering the wood, stone,or tile visual. Finally, a protective wear layer typically between 0.3mm and 0.5mm thick for residential use, and up to 1.0mm for heavy commercial applications shields the surface from scratches, stains, and daily wear.

​What Is Laminate Flooring and How Is It Made

Laminate flooring is a wood-based product made from high-density fibreboard (HDF)  compressed wood fibre bonded with resin under high pressure. Unlike SPC, the core of laminate is essentially a wood product, which means it responds to moisture the way wood does: it absorbs it, swells, and in severe cases, buckles or warps permanently.

A laminate plank also has multiple layers.The bottom balancing layer stabilises the plank and protects against moisture from below. The HDF core provides structural rigidity and thickness. A decorative paper layer printed with a wood or stone visual sits above the core, topped by a melamine resin wear layer that protects the surface. Laminate has been on the market longer than SPC and remains popular for its affordability and wide range of realistic wood finishes but its moisture vulnerability is a fundamental limitation that no amount of surface treatment fully eliminates.

  2. High temperatures  Laminate expands and contracts more noticeably with temperature changes, which can cause gaps or buckling if not installed with adequate expansion gaps.
  3. Daily mopping  Only damp mopping is recommended  never wet mopping. Repeated water exposure degrades the core over time.
  4. Kitchens and bathrooms  Not recommended for wet areas in any Indian climate zone
